Gypsy Goods Giveaway Winner

It's been another great week - and we have another great winner! Woohoo! Congrats go to:

Shaha!!!!

She has two blogs you can go visit.
The first is Lil Fashion Diary:

Her "About Me" section tells her interesting story:
"I am an 18 year old self proclaimed lover of life, and fashion geek. I love books, waking up in the morning, the color yellow, kids, and fashion. I'm the oldest in the family of 3, and I am from a teeny island in the heart of Maldives.

This is my fashion blog, where I write about all things fashion related. I want to be a fashion designer and to have my very own fashion line, so this blog is my journey towards becoming one. Currently doing a degree in Marketing in Maldives College of Higher Education (MCHE)."

Her second blog is Diary Girl:

Congrats again Shaha!

My Desk Companions

I have a big black wooden organizer that sits to the right of my laptop, and on of top of that I have some buddies that keep me company while I work, play, and create! I just received a new addition to my collection, so I thought I'd introduce you to the gang. Here's a group shot:

From left to right we have: Wolfy the wolf pup, Oso the bear, Jazz Kitty the beanie baby, Illia, and Lirael. I an also see a little baby food jar I stick odd beads into to someday possibly use, and some candy canes from Christmas I've never eaten :P

Wolfy was given to my brother and sister of the heart, John and Becca. We all love wolves and whenever I see it I think of them! Oso was from my brother and his new wife (then fiance) Tanya. Jazz Kitty is from my dear best friend Mel.

The two art dolls are the work of Meri - they are what I really want to show off! First the one I've had for a little over a year - Lirael.

Lirael is my art muse. I loves her so much! If you look closely (don't think you can see this all in the photo) she has earrings, a necklace, bracelet, and anklet. And she's purple. Isn't that perfect for me? We work well together.
Meri also made Illia for me:

She's my D&D character, bard, and an adventurer. In this shot you can see her bow (her quiver's on her back), her short sword, and her harp :) Isn't she cute? She's going to be working with Lirael to give me some more geeky ideas to work into my art.

I love my desk companions! Do you have anything special on your desk?

Elfsisters' Art Adventure Starting Next Week

I'm here to announce that my Elfsister and I are starting an Art Adventure - and we want you to join in the fun!

Each Wednesday we will be blogging about our adventures, and inviting you to join along by hosting blog link parties! These are a great way to bring more readers to your blog, and I think the adventures that we are going all will be good for all of us artistically, and did I mention fun? Lots of fun to be had!

We're going to be under taking two main adventures - the first is Wreck This Journal:

I've been wanting to do one of these for a long time - and Meri got me the journal! It should be here in the next few days - which is massively exciting! For our Elfsisters' Art Adventure we are going to do one page a week and take turns picking which page we do. One page may not be a lot, but we both have jewelry shops to keep going, and that gives us a chance to fit it in with our busy lives!

Meri's already started the book, but she's only done a few pages and figures that she can always add to them. This one is my favorite - I'm really excited to do it!

The second part of our adventures is going to be a monthly drawing/painting art challenge. Meri is letting me pick the first one - so May is dedicated to Celtic Art! I've always wanted to learn to draw Celtic knot work, but you don't have to do knot work - do whatever you want to that relates to Celtic art!

Doing two adventures, Wreck this Journal and the Monthly challenge - means that anyone can enter! You can do both challenges (we will), or you can choose just one. Either way, the point is that you have fun and that we grow all grow in our artistic lives!

So how can you join in the fun? Follow my blog, Meri's blog (http://merigreenleaf.blogspot.com/), and come join our new Flickr group! (http://www.flickr.com/groups/elfsistersartadventure/) If you want to do Wreck This Journal you can get it on sale at Amazon (only $7.77!) And you can always start your Celtic Art Adventure now :)

And The Winning Name Is...

I had a lot of fun letting you guys help name my Lord of the Rings themed bracelet! I have to say there were a lot of very inventive names, and even the ones I didn't include in the voting, had lots of potential! I'm saving the list because I think some of these names will end up attached to other pieces, a few of them already have actually!

And the winner was...

The results were:
25 votes total.
Goldberry - 7
Leaves of Lorien - 5
Shires Rebirth - 5
Mirlass - 3
Elf's Envy -2
Reed and Willow - 1
 Laiqalassë -1
Green Leaf Magic -1

Kinga, of White Rabbit Jewels, suggested the winning name! Thanks Kinga - anything you want in my store you can have for $5 off :)

I've been inspired by these leaves and crystals. I have many ideas swirling in my head right now! Some of them are for the leaves and crystals, and some are for using the embellishing technique I used in creating the bracelet. The first thing I did was to make some simple earrings:

Mirlass

Do those names look at all familiar? They should! I'm also working on a "Leaves of Lorien" broach (so I'm kinda glad it didn't win the name for the bracelet), although two are already spoken for, and I want the third for my messenger bag, so I'm going to have to buy more leaves if I want to make one for the shop! Which I plan to do because I also have another bracelet in mind that I plan on calling "The Shire's Rebirth." I also have at least one more pair of earrings I'd like to make! Yes, when I find an idea I like I do run wild with it, why do you ask?

Name that Bracelet (LoTR) - Need Your Vote!

The Voting has Been Closed.
The Winning Name will be announced soon!

I have been overwhelmed by the response I've gotten to my request for a name for this bracelet! There were 33 suggestions total, not all of them on topic, but awesome nonetheless! I have plenty of ideas for ways I can use them :) Here's the list!

1. Old Forest Bracelet
2. Gollum
3. The Gift of Dale
4. Elf's Envy
5. Woodland Elves
6. Leaves of Lorien x2
7. Read and Willow (line from one of Tom Bombadil's songs)
8. Mirlass (jewel leaf)
9. Enchanted Wizardry
10. Emerald Eyes
11. In Touch With Greenality
12. Evergreen Eyes
13. Rosie Cotton's Promise
14. Emerald City
15. Return to Oz
16. Emerald Forest
17. Greenleaf
18. Laiqalassë - laica is green, and lassë is leaf.
19. Mirrorwind Glass
20. This bracelet belongs to Goldberry, the river daughter who lives with Tom Bombadil in the Old Forest...
"Her long yellow hair rippled down her shoulders; her gown was green; green as young reed;shot with silver like beads of dew; and her belt was gold;shaped like a chain of flag-lilies set with the pale blue-blue eyes of forget-me-nots."
She is neither elf or daughter of man, but something quite different, more earthy yet ethereal.I would name it after her.
21. Fangorn Forest
22. Arvenesque Forest
23. Green with Envy
24. Ferngully
25. Rustle of Leaves
26. Deep Heart of the Forest

Giveaway Feature - Gypsy Goods!

This post has been closed.
Check back each Monday for new Giveaways!

1. Where can we find your work and what do you create?

My main shops are on Artfire, Etsy and Zibbet.  I create a wide range of unique goods from Hand Pressed Buttons to Eco- Home Goods to Fun, Fantasy Accessories.

2. What's your favorite part about being an independent artist?

The freedom to work when you are inspired and set your own limits and hours.  The spark of an idea can come at the most random time and it is great to be able to go with it.

3. Where do you find your inspiration?

It can be anywhere..Life, movies and the materials themselves.  Sometimes, I will lay out some fabric, beads, trim, lace, and let the piece define itself.

4. What advice would you give to other artists?

You do not need the validation from others about your art.  You can open the door to some negative feedback and it will be hard to get yourself back on track.  Some people just do not see the difference in handmade work and they will judge it like a big box store creation.  Others that envy talent can be jealous and negative.  Open the door to the positive, creative thoughts and don't let others define you.  Hey, I have a quirky sense of creativity and not everyone gets me and I am more than fine with that.

If you are just getting started... practice, practice, practice.  Don't be afraid to take it apart, start over or re-invent the piece.  The beginner pieces are not the best you will create.  Keep one of them and every now and then, look at it and see how you have advanced your skills.  Ask yourself:  Could I have done better?  If you said yes, learn from the mistake and begin again.  If you get stuck on how to complete it, put it in the middle of the table, look at it, ignore it or sleep on the problem, you will solve the puzzle.

Thanks Kathy!
Now for what she's giving away:

But wait! It's not just the above picture - it's winner's choice of buttons!

Let's Play - Name That Bracelet! (LoTR Themed)

The current theme for the Etsy Beadweavers is Lord of the Rings - and I've been inspired! So far I have a bracelet (see below) and two pairs of earrings that I aren't necessarily LoTR specific, but I used the beads from the bracelet :P I also have a small embroidery hoop with green fabric in front of me to make a broach :) Yep - I'm a happy girl!

My only problem? The bracelet has no name! Let me share it with you before I go on:

I'm in love with this one! I used large seed beads in dark green for the base, and embellished it with two sizes of crystals, silver beads, and of course, leaf beads!

Now for what I need from you:
I need a name.

I know that I want to name this after something to do with the shire and the hobbits. I know there are a lot of forests and stuff in LoTR, but for some reason I can just see a Hobbit wearing this at a party something like the one Bilbo threw (I might even disappear at the end, you never know! I don't really want to simply call it "The Shire Bracelet" though. So suggest some names for me! If I pick your name I'll give you a $5 gift certificate valid in either shop :) I'll announce the name of the bracelet (and list it) on Tuesday! Why Tuesday? Because tomorrow the next Giveaway goes up!

Edit: My elf-sister has informed me this may need to be something different because Hobbity is more earthy. I'm conceding your point so I will take any and all suggestions - not sure Shire related (and now I may have to make something earthy :P)

Happy Easter

From me and mine - to you and yours - Happy Easter!

Gundowerks Giveaway Winner!

I love reading all the comments I get on these weekly giveaways!
But my favorite part? Announcing the winners of course :)
This week is...

Behind Charms N Things is a lovely lady named Debbie!
So make sure you go visit her facebook and get to know her a little :)

Congrats!

On a less exciting note, that bazaar I was talking about?
I didn't make it. I got hit by a migraine at the last minute
and this is the first time all day I've been able to sit up :(
On the positive side - shops are open again!
And since I had no sales today I'll through in something special for anyone who orders this weekend :)

It's Bazaar Day! Which means...

Ok, yah, I've kinda lost my mind. Then again, that goes without saying right? I've been running around like a chicken with my head cut off since I started picking up odd jobs and I've been adjusting to doing "normal" jobs again. So what did I do? I signed up for a bazaar! Rock on! (ps - my brother has a shirt with the above saying, I think I need it more these days but it wouldn't fit!)

The point of all this? I'm out a here today :) I'll be at Image Elem, (122nd ave orchards, Vancouver, WA) all day long so my shops are closed! I will be back to announce this week's giveaway winner - tonight or tomorrow :P Depends on how tired I am! :P In the mean time...go enter the giveaway! It needs your love :)

I Feel Loved!

The last few weeks I've gotten LOTS of goodies in the mail! So why am I talking? I should simply be showing off! First off is a lovely necklace I received from a fellow Bead Weaver - Silvia! You can visit her shop over at: Sobby :)This was part of our spring swap and I feel very blessed!

As you can see the pendant is reversible - which is a great feature! I wear it with the bead in the center facing out, but I like that I can switch it up if I feel like it :) I wore it to church on Sunday and it went great with one of my favorite shirts!

This next one is from Penny of Copper Penny Designs! It's part of a Pay It Forward - and I'll be doing another one of those coming up soon to say thanks :)

I don't wear gold very often - but I have a gold necklace I need an excuse to wear (cuz its from my Daddy) so this would be great to wear with that! Hmm - now I need to make some appropriate earrings to wear with it...

The next bit is a TON fo beady goodness that I got from Kristi Bowman Designs as part of a Bead Soup Swap hosted by Lori Anderson! Get ready for lots of drool-worthy beads!

I'm determined to make myself something with a few of these (I always forget to make myself jewelry then I have nothing to wear and show off!) and the rest will go into things for my shop :) Now to find the time...

Giveaway Feature - Gundowerks!

This Giveaway is Closed.
Check back on Monday for the next one!

Sorry we missed last weeks giveaway - but we're back up and running - and I love what we have to giveaway this week! But first - do you want to be featured on this blog and get lots of attention for a full week? Let me know! I'm looking to fill some upcoming weeks :)

1. Where can we find your work and what do you create?

My work is for sale at Artfire: http://gundowerks.artfire.com I create a very eclectic variety, using primarily polymer clay, stones and wire. I do quite a few pendants and brooches, earrings of all kinds, and I also have hand beaded wall hangings. Coming soon will be greeting cards and hair adornments! You never know what you'll find in my shop.

2. What's your favorite part about being an independent artist?

I do this mainly for fun, so my favorite part is the freedom. I'm a stay at home Mom and my time gets a bit limited, but when I set down at the table to create I feel fantastic.

3. Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere. I get ideas all the times from jewelry, clothing, nature... but my greatest inspiration is pulling out my art supplies and just starting to fiddle.

4. What advice would you give to other artists?

The primary advice I give is advice I struggle to take every day: Believe in yourself. It's hard to have faith in your own ability, but it's essential to being an artist. Other than that, the most important thing is quality. Try to use the best elements you can afford, and never make something to sell that you wouldn't wear yourself or give as a gift.

Now for the Wonderful Giveaway Prize!

Rosso Corsa Heart Pendant

What she has to say about it...

"This is a solid polymer clay heart made from rich
red clay with a subtle silver spiral in the center. It has a really neat
brickwork texture, and the findings are all handmade.
Valued $15"

So how can you win?

My Favorite Kind of Lace - Beaded!

Sorry I've been AWOL this week - I got eaten by the migraine monsters! Oh dear... But I'm back and at 'em today! I've even spent most of my day beading, but more about that later.

I got this wonderful picture today:

That's my dear friend Veet - and she was the winner of my giveaway this month! Can you see what she's wearing? Yes? That's the necklace she won! She said she loves it (yes, I live for affirmation!) and that it goes amazingly well with her McDonals uniform which amuses me to no end.

The design for this necklace is actually one of my favorite designs. It's done using a beading technique called "Antique Lace." I learned it from a book that a friend gave me before I ever opened up shop, and I've made quite a few necklaces using it!

I like this pattern because it looks like lace, but it's very modern! It makes a great choker, or you can wear it longer and twisted. I tend to stick to the chokers though. One of these days I really should make some bracelets with it....

Just to tell you how much I love this pattern, not only have I sold several of these, but I have one I wear (in black, purple, and silver), my Mom has two (one in blues, one in red), and my mother in law has one that matches the one I sent Veet! Whew. Wait...that means I need to make one for my sister in law...

When I was putting the necklace up for the giveaway I realized it had been awhile since I made one of these so guess what I'm working on right now? I'll show it to you next week :)

Sunshine Out of Lemons

This week has quickly developed into one of those weeks. You know what I'm talking about - those weeks where your constantly behind, drink waaaay to much coffee, and no matter how much you try to make things work out, nothing goes the way it was supposed to? Well this is definitely one of those weeks! That's why there was no giveaway put up yesterday, and not even a single post! Unfortunately, I'm not going to end up having a giveaway this week, but we're all ready to go for next week!

Now - let's make some sunshine out of lemons :)

Isn't that little girl adorable? And I love the outfit!

I need to go take care of some paperwork this afternoon -
and do you know what I'm going to do?
I'm going to keep this picture firmly in my mind!
And hold onto the tranquility of the image.

Ok so this one's from my shop...
But it always makes me smile!

Now I leave you with a poem I wrote for my hubby one day :)

Not About Sunshine and Flowers
by Ruthie Stickney, 2011

“Write a poem” my hubby said,
“Why are all your poem’s sad?”
He asked, and then said,
“Write a poem that’s happy.”

“I’ll write a poem that’s happy,
A poem about sunshine and flowers,”
I told him, thinking that those,
Those are happy images.

“Don’t write about those,”
He told me, “Not about sunshine,
Not about flowers, not these,
That is not happiness.”

So I’ll write a poem that is happy,
But not about sunshine,
And not about flowers,
Definitely not these.

Sunshine makes me think,
Think of good times,
And warm feelings, but…
This is not about sunshine.

Flowers are symbols,
Symbols of love and joy,
And close relationships,
But this is not about flowers.

Happiness, this is about that,
Not about sunshine and flowers.

Happiness is about much more,
Happiness is waking up,
Curled up in warm blankets,
And knowing that the sun has risen.

Happiness is about many things,
The birds of the air and the bees,
The bees that buzz and fly,
And where they find their nectar.

Happiness is about the simple things,
So yes, happiness is about sunshine,
And happiness is about flowers too,
But this is not a poem about those.

Social Networking Karma - Twitter

In my on-going series on Social Networking Karma I want to look at some specific techniques that you can use to promote others, build your business, and effectively promote your own shop. Today - Twitter!

We hear all the time that Twitter is a powerful tool. I have to admit that I've gone back and forth on how I feel about this. There have been times where I've used twitter religiously, and times where I said "whatever" and ignored it. It's been a long, hard, road for me. Along the way I've learned some approaches that don't work, and quite a few things that do work! Here's my advice:

1. Don't feel like you have to read every tweet that every person you follow sends out.
While in an idea world you might see everything, the reality is that we are all balancing a variety of important things, and if you have a lot people you follow, seeing every tweet just isn't manageable. So what do you do? Well...

2. If you have unlimited texts - subscribe to mobile texts if you want to see every tweet a person sends out. Just remember that you will be overwhelmed if you do this for more than a few people! Another option is...

3. Make a list of your top 20 people. These are the people that you want to check in on every day! When you log into twitter, use that list to dictate what you read first.

4. Use those lists for other things! Honestly, I don't utilize the power of lists the way I should, but I can see the potential! Feel free to use these lists to organize the people you follow however you want :)

5. Tweet and Retweet other people's work! This is the big one that I do. I may not be on twitter all the time, but when I am on there I try to retweet at least one person's tweet that I like. Ideally - two or three. This has lead to some great conversations and new friends! Also - when I see an item I really like, from a team mate or in a treasury, or just from browsing - I take a minute or so to tweet it! If you have that persons twitter address than include them in the tweet by doing "@their name." If not - send them a short message with a link to the tweet!

There is a lot more that I could say about twitter - but I don't want this to get too long. So I'll just add one more thing. Do you know about hashtags? That's when you end your tweet with things like: #etsy, #artfire, and many, many more! These help people to find your tweets and can be really important. Trends occur when lots of people are using and searching these tags, and I'm trying to start a new trend!

I'm using the hashtag #ArtistsTogether whenever I promote other artists. Why? It comes back to the whole concept of Social Networking Karma. Independent Artists find the best success when they work together. Hence - #ArtistsTogether! I have to admit one of my friends helped me come up with the tag and I can't for the life of me remember which one >_>

My challenge to you is to promote other artists, as well as yourself, on your twitter! I'd love it if you'd join with me and use the #ArtistsTogether tag as well - thanks guys!

One last thing - leave your twitter account in the comments! Mine is: www.twitter.com/rosewksjewelry

Social Networking Karma - Your Responses

I have a lot more I'd like to talk about with Social Networking Karma - but your responses to the first post  were so wonderful that I need to dedicate this post to you guys and what you said! So from the mouth of my readers:

"I absolutely believe in it!! Thats why I do http://dailyhandmadepicks.blogspot.com to feature a cool artisan every day!!! Self promotion does NOTHING if you don't reciprocate! :)" ~ MamasLittleMonkeys

"Your comments are right on. When I opened your ArtFire message this morning that you had featured my cuff, I was delightfully surprised. I've been in a slump lately thinking my work will never be good enough to be noticed and now you've given me a little ray of hope. Thank you so much!" ~ beadsandblooms

"I always feature 4 or 5 artists every Friday on my blog and it's so fun getting the responses from them and my readers too!" ~ Beaded Tail

I just want to finish up with a big thank you to everyone for all the comments you leave on my blog! I've been having a lot of fun working on building traffic to my blog and I really appreciate each and everyone of you who visit and join the discussion :)

A Bead Woven Giveaway from My Shop!

This Giveaway has been closed.
Please check back each week for the new ones!

I can't even begin to tell you how much fun I've been having doing these giveaways! This is only the tenth week and we've already grown so much. My first giveaway had only 30 entries, and some of them had less, but the last one had 57 - that's incredible! So, to celebrate, I decided to giveaway one of my bead woven necklaces this week :)

If you click on the link above you'll get all the nitty-gritty details, but I'll tell you here that this is one of my favorite patterns to make! In fact, I haven't made one for awhile, so I think I shall have to make another one soon. Anyway, I love this particular piece both because it uses the antique lace stitch that I love, but also because it's so sparkly! I'm a sucker for sparkly. In fact I tend to get distracted easily by sparkly things, which is dangerous as a jewelry artist. :P

So How Can You Win?

1. Leave a comment on this blog = 1 entry
2. Visit my FB page and "like" it. Leave a comment there to let me know your a new or returning fan! = 1 entry
3. Visit my Artfire page or Etsy page, come back and leave a separate comment with your favorite piece = 1 entry
4. Follow this blog or let me know your already following = 1 entry
5. Announce this contest on plurk or twitter, come back and leave a comment with a link = 1entry
6. Blog about it! Since this is means monopolizing your blog space it = 2 entries
7. Make a purchase in either of my stores (Artfire or Etsy) = 5 entries!

That's a total of 12 possible entries! Please remember to leave separate entries for each entry to make my job easier! I'll be keeping track in a spreadsheet and each entry will be given a separate number (based on order received) and I'll pick a winner using the random number generator.

*Winner to be announced Saturday, April 9th, in the Evening*

For an extra incentive - you know how option 7 to enter was to make a purchase?
Well if you send $10 in one of my shops you'll get a pair of earrings valued $5 along with your order!
So you get an extra pair of earrings - and 5 entries towards this giveaway...
Sounds like a good time to shop!
